Joe Thomas' career started when he joined Brookfield Central Lacers football team, as he played right tackle, defensive end, tight end, fullback, placekicker and punter. Then, he was recognized as PrepStar All-American, second-team All-America offensive guard, and WFCA 2002 Defensive Player of the Year. In college, he played for Wisconsin Badgers football team from 2003 up to 2006.
Thomas won the Outland Trophy and was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American. He was chosen and signed a six-year contract to the Cleveland Browns during the NFL Draft 2007. He was in the Pro Bowl selection for the seven consecutive years.
