Edward G. Hochuli was born on December 25, 1950  in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Before his football officiating career started, he played collegiately at University of Texas at El Paso  for four seasons. Best distinguished for his athletic physique, Hochuli has served as the officiating officers of many playoff games which include two Super Bowl events. Together with Mike Carey, he was voted by the NFL head coaches as the best referee with a total of 8 votes.

Ed Hochuli has six children with his wife Cathie. Shawn, one of his children, seems to be following his father's career path. Shawn served as the head referee between Arizona Rattlers and Jacksonville Sharks at theArenaBowl XXIV  a day after his father acted as officiating officer between Jacksonville Jaguars and New England Patriots.
