After playing football at the Western Illinois University, Ed Hartwell was signed by the Baltimore Ravens as the 4th round pick of the 2001 National Football League (NFL) Draft.

He played for the Ravens from 2001 to 2004. In 2004, he was absorbed by the Atlanta Falcons and signed him to a six-year $26.25 million contract. However, he was released by the Falcons in 2007. Following his dismissal from Falcons, he signed with Cincinnati Bengals in May 2007 only to be released four months after. In May 2008, he signed with the Oakland Raiders but also released in August of the same year when the team signed Glenn Pakulak.
