Antonio Gates' football career began when he played for Detroit Central High School. At that time, he also played basketball for the said school.
In college, he attended Michigan State University but he want to play football. Upon enrolling, football coach Nick Saban wanted him to play for his team. Instead, Gates pursued to continue his passion to play basketball for the Eastern Michigan University. But he played two seasons for the Kent State University's Golden Flashes football team.
Then, in 2003 he was chosen by the San Diego Chargers during the NFL Draft and signed a contract as an undrafted free agent. He was included to the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team and became the seventh tight end with 500 career receptions in 2010.
