Jerome James started playing basketball by spending time doing hoops on the court at a community center in Tampa, Florida. His mom's friend noticed him playing and called Texas A&M Rattlers basketball coach Ron Brown. During 1994-1995, he was redshirted by the team.

He contributed in 81 games with 16.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 4.48 blocks with 49.5% successful field goal attempts. James was twice named as an All-MEAC selection. He declared to forego the remaining one season and entered the 1998 NBA Draft, instead. He was selected as the second round, 36th overall pick by the Sacramento Kings.

Due to the NBA lockout, James played for the Harlem Globetrotters. He returned to the Kings in 1999. He averaged 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds in 16 games for the team. He was waived by the Kings in 2000.

James also played for other teams such as Seattle SuperSonics, and New York Knicks. When Knicks traded him to Chicago Bulls, he was waived shortly before 2009-2010 season due to injury sustained before joining the team.

He continued his basketball career in Puerto Rico and joined Caciques de Humacao in 2012 and Atenienses de Manatí in 2015.
