Josh Barnett began his MMA career during the time he was trained at the dojo of Jim Harrison. In 1997, he competed for the United Full Contract Federation where he won via rear-naked choke submission. With astonishing 9-0 record, he was invited to compete in Ultimate Fighting Championship.

He made his debut in UFC during the UFC 28 in 2000. During the match against Bobby Hoffman which Barnett won the fight, he was tested positive for banned substances and reprimanded via a warning from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
