John Dodson joined Moriarty High School's wrestling team. He was a two-time state champion, four-time district champion, and a state runner-up. In 2002, he started his MMA training when he was recruited by fighters Chris Luttrell and Greg Jackson. He played in several submission tournaments before turning pro.

Eventually, he signed for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and competed in The Ultimate Fighter: Team Bisping vs. Team Miller in 2011. Dodson was selected to be a part of Team Mayhem, and defeated John Albert via unianimous decision.
