Evan Tanner become interested in the world of wrestling while studying at Caprock High School. He was named as Texas State Championship during the last two years at school. After a brief stint studying at University of Oklahoma, he participated in a local mixed martial arts tournament.

He began fighting in 1997, as Tanner entered the defunct United Shoot Wrestling Federation. Then, he competed to Japan as he appeared under the Pancrase organization. He won five overseas fights before landing a spot in Ultimate Fighting Championship in 1999.

Tanner was one of the best mixed martial artist during his career. He was the UFC Middleweight Champion when he defeated David Terrelll in UFC 51. Then, he faced other fighters such as Kendall Grove, Lance Gibson, Chris Haseman, and Phil Baroni, among others.

Evan Loyd Tanner was born on February 11, 1971 in Amarillo, Texas. He attended Simpson College, but he dropped out of the said school. On September 8, 2008, he found dead in the desert near Palo Verde, California.
