Tomas Plekanec joined the junior ice hockey team HC Kladno. Then, he played for the club's senior team. During his stint with the team, he has 42 points from the 53 games he appeared.

During the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the 3rd round, 71st overall pick. Plekanec started to play for the Canadiens's club system in 2002-2003 season, when he was assigned to American Hockey League's Hamilton Bulldogs.
