Paul Martin began playing hockey when he was in high school, representing Elk River High School's hockey team. Eventually, he joined the Minnesota Golden Gophers where he led the team in winning the 2003 NCAA Division I National Championship.
He was chosen by the New Jersey Devils during the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. During his first season with the team, Martin did 24 points in 70 games he played. He stayed with the Devils until the 2009-2010 season.
As an unrestricted free agent, Martin signed a five-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2010. Meanwhile, he appeared in several international competitions representing Team USA.
