He began playing golf at the age of ten as well as other sports including baseball, football, soccer and basketball while growing up.

Johnson attended Regis High School and focused on playing golf. He led his school to win a state championship in 1992. He went on to attend Drake University where he also led the Bulldogs to win three NCAA regional meets and two Missouri Valley championships.
