Thomas Michael Izzo was born on January 30, 1955 in Iron Mountain, Michigan. After finishing a degree from Northern Michigan University, he went on to serve as head coach of Ishpeming High School. From 1979 through 1983, he served as Northern Michigan University's assistant head coach.
From 1995 up to today, he served as the head coach of the men's basketball team of Michigan State University. This made him as the longest-tenured head coach at the Big Ten Conference.
Izzo's teams are known for their toughness, rebounding skills, and strong guard play. Shannon Brown is the first player under the head coaching of Izzo who have been drafted into and won the championship in the National Basketball Association. Brown won his first NBA Championship on June 14, 2009. His victory was followed by his second championship only a year later.
