After attending Science Hill High School, he enrolled at the University of Florida where he played as quarterback for the Florida Gators football. Eventually, he was selected as the 3rd overall pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 1967 NFL Draft. He played for the San Francisco 49ers until 1975.

Prior to the onset of his coaching career, Steve Purrier played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
