Scottish football manager and former player, Sir Alexander Chapman "Alex" Ferguson has a worth of $60 million. He is the richest football manager in Britain. Known to generations of football followers purely for his management of Manchester United, Ferguson has been deeply involved in the beautiful game since 1957, when he joined Queen's Park in his native Glasgow as an amateur centre-forward straight from school. In a 17-year career he played for five other clubs: St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United. He cut his managerial teeth at East Stirlingshire before soon moving to St Mirren and then Aberdeen, where he broke the Old Firm dominance of Scottish football. That success encouraged Manchester United to appoint him manager in November 1986 and this 2012 season he is aiming to celebrate 25 years in charge with a record 20th league title at the age of 70.

France Football 2012 list of highest-paid managers put Ferguson’s salary at £6.6m a year. He is on an annual rolling contract and shows no inclination to retire. Ferguson is a member of the Eclipse 35 film investment partnership, which the tax tribunal has ruled cannot claim tax relief. He is also a member of three similar partnerships: Clyde Films, Cherwell Films and Scotts Atlantic Partners. Even when he does stand down, Ferguson is unlikely to disappear from public view. He fits his keen interest in horseracing around his commitments in the dugout. He owns or part-owns several horses including Harry The Viking, which started favourite on April 2012 Scottish Grand National. The horse failed to finish. Ferguson will expect better of his two-legged thoroughbreds.
