Born William John Donovan Jr. on May 30, 1965 in Rockville Center, Long Island, New York, he is the son of Billy Donovan Sr., one of the three leading scorers in the history of the basketball program of the Boston College Eagles. He graduated from St. Agnes Cathedral High School and then went to Providence College in 1983 and played guard on the basketball team. Known as “Billy the Kid” to Providence fans, he has improved under coach Rick Pitino and led the team to the Final Four and received the Southeast Regional Most Valuable Player award.

During the 1987 NBA Draft, Donovan was the 68th overall pick in the third round and was drafted by the Utah Jazz. He later signed a one-year contract with the New York Knicks coached by Pitino. However, he was quite an unsuccessful player. He then went to work in a Wall Street investment firm. In 1989, he joined Pitino as the assistant coach at the University of Kentucky (1990-1994). He became successful which led to a coaching job at Marshall University (1994-1996). He became the youngest coach in the history of National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) at the age of 28.

Billy Donovan became the head coach of the Florida Gators men’s basketball team of the University of Florida in 1996. His career is highlighted with two NCAA Championship Games in 2000 and 2008, eight straight NCAA Tournament Appearances, and eight straight 20-Win seasons. The team has won back-to-back Southeastern Conference (SEC) Tournament Championships that happened only twice in the University of Florida history. In 2006, the Gators won the NCAA National Championship, the first ever men’s national basketball title.
