Born William John Donovan Jr. on May 30, 1965 in Rockville Center, Long Island, New York, he is the son of Billy Donovan Sr., one of the three leading scorers in the history of the basketball program of the Boston College Eagles. He graduated from St. Agnes Cathedral High School and then went to Providence College in 1983 and played guard on the basketball team.
