Named as the Boxer of the Decade during the 1980s, Leonard is known for his notable matches with some International Boxing Hall of Fame inductees like Roberto Durán, Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hearns and Wilfred Benítez. He is considered as the first boxer to have won over $100 million for purses alone. He is also the first professional boxer to have won world titles in five different weight divisions.

At age 13, Leonard started his amateur boxing career. His initial years as an amateur boxer proved to a success however, as years passed by, Leonard decided to change plans, and pursue a professional career, thereby leaving his Olympic dreams behind. Prior to his entry to his professional boxing career, Sugar Ray Leonard had to struggle in providing the needs of his parents who are incapable of working as well as giving financial support to his child and the mother of his child, without any endorsement opportunities.
