He attended Bel-Air Elementary School where he was reportedly involved in his first fight at the age of 13 to defend a friend. He continued his studies with Cutler Ridge Middle School then with Richmond Heights Middle School. He went to Miami Palmetto High School where he was the star middle linebacker. He attended both Bethune-Cookman University and the University of Miami where he had an athletic scholarship and studied criminal justice for a year and a half. He had a tryout with the Miami Dolphins in 1997 and was part of the pre-season squad yet he was not able to get a place in the first team.

Kimbo Slice became famous for street fights which were spread on the Internet. This led the Rolling Stone to call him The King of the Web Brawlers. He left the underground fighting scene and went professional when he signed a contract with EliteXC 2007. He competed in The Ultimate Heavyweights where he lost in his first fight to series winner Roy Nelson. When he debuted in the UFC, he won over Houston Alexander in The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights finale. Since then, he became a professional boxer.
