William Robert Hamilton started became a baseball player when he joined the Kansas City Cowboys in 1888. Then, he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1890. He stayed with Phillies for five years. From 1896 to 1901, Hamilton played for the Boston Beaneaters.
