After attending West Hills High School, Strasburg planned to study at Stanford University. Unfortunately, he wasn't accepted. Eventually, he enrolled at San Diego State University where he played for San Diego State Aztecs.

In 2008, he was selected to become a part of the United States national baseball team. The team participated at the 2008 World University Baseball Championship where it won a gold medal.

A year later, Stephen Strasburg was selected by the Washington Nationals as its #1 overall pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft. In August of the same year, he agreed to a  four-year, $15.1 million worth of contract which is considered as a record breaker in the history of Washington Nationals. The staggering dollar-amount contract was once held by Mark Prior when he agree to $10.5 million contract in 2001.
