Dominican Octavio Dotel is a professional baseball pitcher. He was born Octavio Eduardo Dotel Diaz on November 25, 1973 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and attended the Liceo Cansino Afuera.

In 1993, Dotel was signed by the New York Mets as an amateur free agent, playing for their minor league affiliate in the Dominican Summer League through 1994. He was later promoted through the Met’s minor league system for the following seasons. On December 23, 1999, he was traded by the Mets along with Roger Cedeño and minor league player Kyle Kessel to the Houston Astros for Mike Hampton and Derek Bell.

After a year, Octavio Dotel got three wins in 16 games, as well as 16 saves when he was converted from starter to relief pitcher, filling in as closer for an injured Billy Wagner. He became a starter for closer in 2004 when Wagner after traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in 2003.

Dotel was traded to the Oakland Athletics on June 24, 2004 in a three-team trade. In December 2005, after more than a year, he signed a one-year deal with the New York Yankees. At the end of the 2006 MLB season, he became a free agent and signed a one-year contract worth $5 million with the Kansas City Royals.

On July 31, 2007, Octavio Dotel was traded to the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Kyle Davies. He agreed to a  two-year, $11 million deal with the Chicago White Sox on January 1, 2008. He then signed a one-year, $3.25 deal, plus bonuses for games finished, with the Pittsburgh Pirates on January 21, 2010. He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for James McDonald and Andrew Lambo on July 31, 2010.

Almost four months later, on September 18, 2010, Dotel was traded to the Colorado Rockies. He agreed to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million with the Toronto Blue Jays with a club option for 2012. He was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals on July 27, 2011 along with Edwin Jackson, Marc Rzepczynski and Corey Patterson for Colby Rasmus, P. J. Walters, Trever Miller and Brian Tallet.

On December 7, 2011, he signed with the Detroit Tigers.
