Aníbal Alejandro Sánchez, Jr.  was born on February 27, 1984 in Maracay, Venezuela. As an international free agent, the Boston Red Sox signed Sanchez in 2001. At the end of the 2005 seasons, along with Jesús Delgado, Harvey Garcia and Hanley Ramirez, he was sent to the Florida Marlins, in exchange for Mike Lowell, Guillermo Mota, and Josh Beckett.

Since 2012, Sanchez has been playing for the Detroit Lions after the franchise signed him to a five-year, $80 million deal. The contract stipulates that he would receive a total salary of $75 million over five years, and also offers an option worth $16 million for a sixth year.
