While fans may be divided on the ending of the long-running sitcom How I Met Your Mother, one thing everyone most of agree on is that the intricately interlinked seasons of the CBS sitcom were filled with plenty of varying hilarious and clever recurring gags. Some of these 'bits' were regular occurrences or witty catch phrases, while others were throwbacks to jokes that happened seasons earlier. Which one of these recurring HIMYM jokes is your favorite?

17. The Playbook

This book is filled with ploys for picking up chicks like the Mrs. Stinson where Barney dresses up like Mrs. Doubtfire.

16. The Salutes

Ted and Robin share an in-joke that’s so lame it’s hilarious. If either says a phrase beginning with a military rank a salute ensues. Major Buzzkill, General Knowledge, Corporal Punishment…

15. The Doppelgängers

Barney, Robin, Ted, Lilly and Marshall each had fellow New Yorkers that looked exactly like them. Viewers were introduced to Lesbian Robin, Moustache Marshall, Stripper Lily and Mexican Ted over the span of many seasons. Finally, Marshall and Lily find Barney’s doppelgänger, which they take as a sign from the universe to start a family.

14. The Ducky Tie

Barney is forced to wear this monstrosity for a year after losing a bet. He gets out of having to wear the tie for the whole year as long as Marshall can slap him three more times as part of...

13. The Slap Bet

Barney gets slapped for the first time in season two but doesn't get slapped for the final time until the second-to-last episode of the series.

12. Eating a Sandwich

Afraid to let his kids know he has smoked pot several times, Ted uses the euphemistic 'eating sandwiches' to describe incidents of pot smoking.

11.  The Blue French Horn

Ted steals this from the restaurant where he and Robin had their first date and it's referenced throughout the series. Spoilers: He makes the same romantic gesture years later when his kids give him the OK to start dating again.

10. “Have You Met Ted?”

Being the master wingman he is, Barney uses this classic icebreaker to introduce any girl to his best buddy - who's rarely enthusiastic about the introductions.

9. The Halloween Costumes

The costumes the gang wore during the many rooftop Halloween parties were always good for a few laughs. Ted’s costumes were known for being particularly ridiculous and obscure.

8. The Interventions

True friends are honest with each other, so when Barney’s magic got out of control or Marshall’s obsession with graphs and charts went to far something had to be done.

7. The Perfect Week

In season five Barney managed to complete the difficult task of sleeping with seven different women in seven consecutive days. But after he pulled off a perfect month in the series finale, which turned out to be the best mistake of his life.

6. The Pineapple

We never did find out where the pineapple came from, despite many references to this season one episode throughout the series.

5. Lily and Robin

Lilly has a crush on Robin and it is mentioned many times in the series. They even end up kissing on three separate occasions.

4. Robin Sparkles

We first met Robin Sparkles when the gang discovers her music video “Let’s Go to the Mall.” Robin shed her Robin Sparkles image after becoming obsessed with Paul Shaffer; she instead channeled Alanis Morrissette and became Robin Daggers.

The day Barney first put on a suit was the day his life changed forever.

1. The Yellow Umbrella

This is Ted’s one connection to the mother throughout the entire series, and teasingly hides her identity until the penultimate season. It became the focal point and unifying symbol for the show.
