It’s not exactly the way Jean-Claude Van Damme would have preferred being back in the headlines, but youngest son Nicholas Van Varenberg was recently arrested for pulling a knife on his roomie.
According to sources speaking with TMZ, police arrested Varenberg last Sunday in Tempe, Arizona. They were called to help settle a domestic dispute when one of their apartment neighbors noticed a loud bang after an elevator had been punched.
Police arrived at the apartment building and followed a trail of blood to Varenberg’s apartment. There, they spoke to both Varenberg and his roommate and confirmed that Varenberg had injured his left hand.
Initially, the cops left him off with a warning, but then 20 minutes later, the police were called again, this time by the roommate. He said that Varenberg pulled a knife on him and accused him of letting the police into the building, and had been kept from leaving the apartment at knifepoint.
Officers returned and searched the apartment, finding a knife and marijuana. They then placed Varenberg under arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, unlawful imprisonment, marijuana possession, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Varenberg was released from police custody after posting a $10,000 bond. There’s no word on where he got the money, but it seems likely a call to daddy was placed from the big house.

At his initial court appearance, it appeared that Varenberg did not have a lawyer, and at this point, it’s unknown whether or not he retained counsel. If he hasn’t lawyered up yet, he’d better get on it, since his preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 20, 2017.
You may remember Jean-Claude Van Damme from his hit martial arts action movies from the 80s and 90s. The splits-performing actor got his start in Bloodsport and found his way into a slew of 90s action films like Double Impact, Universal Soldier, and Timecop. He made a resurgence in The Expendables 2 where he played the villain Jean Vilain – the writers having evidently gone for the descriptive naming conventions popular in 80s action films.
Van Damme is set to appear in Black Water, an upcoming action-thriller set on a nuclear submarine, sometime in 2018.
