Chris Brown has commented on one of Rihanna’s racy Instagram posts, and the internet has caught fire.
The “Umbrella” singer returned to her native Barbados for the Crop Over Festival, an annual event that originally celebrated the end of the sugarcane harvest, but now celebrates all things Barbados. Calypso music fills the air, and Caribbean cooking fills the streets, it’s basically a non-stop party for the small island nation.
The carnival culminates in The Grand Kadooment, where musicians get decked out in dazzling costumes and dance in a parade marching through the streets to a final party at Brighton beach.
Rihanna attends every year, and this year’s costume is certainly eye popping, according to Rihanna’s ex-beau Chris Brown.
The famed singer posted several pictures of herself adorned in a revealing and spectacular costume which leaves little to the imagination and covers the most eye-drawing parts with dazzling rhinestones while trailing a tail of feathers to put a peacock to shame. The pictures easily surpassed three million likes, with one of them from the former lover.
Brown’s response was only the two eye emojis, surely mimicking the real-world reaction of anyone to view the pictures, but it was enough to draw the ire of Rihanna’s fans.
“PLs keep your negative energy away from Rihanna @ChrisBrownOfficial,” one follower responded, while another replied, “Chris gtfo.”
Their anger is understandable given the two’s checkered past. In 2009, Rihanna was scheduled to perform at the 51st Grammy Awards show but mysteriously canceled shortly before her performance. Rumors began to swirl that the singer had been assaulted by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown. Then, pictures obtained by TMZ showed the singer with visible injuries and clear signs of domestic abuse.

Brown was later arrested and charged with assault and making criminal threats. He pled guilty in June of 2009 and was sentenced to five years probation and a 50-yard restraining order, with a 10-yard exception at public events.
The event stirred controversy in the paparazzi community, as the photographs were originally leaked from the police department—something that is never done to other victims of domestic abuse. A proposed “Rihanna Law” would have made the publication of any pictures of domestic abuse illegal, but was never ratified.
Years later, Rihanna revealed the tale of her trauma to Vanity Fair. “You realize after a while that in that situation you’re the enemy. You want the best for them, but if you remind them of their failures, or if you remind them of bad moments in their life, or even if you say I’m willing to put up with something, they think less of you—because they know you don’t deserve what they’re going to give.”
“And if you put up with it, maybe you are agreeing that you [deserve] this, and that’s when I finally had to say, ‘Uh-oh, I was stupid thinking I was built for this.’ Sometimes you just have to walk away,” the singer added.
