If you’re ever spending time in China and watching television, you might be shocked at amount of content that is banned. In an attempt to cut down on all “vulgar, immoral and unhealthy content,” Chinese censors have recently revealed new regulations to make sure that they do not promote any content that “exaggerates the dark side of society,” and apparently that extends to homosexual content.

Unfortunately for millions of people, this included a popular drama series Addicted which was cancelled as a result of the ban. The series followed two men who are in a homosexual relationship and was available on different websites.

The government responded stating that the show was in violation of the new guidelines which, state

“No television drama shall show abnormal sexual relationships and behaviours, such as incest, same-sex relationships, sexual perversion, sexual assault, sexual abuse, sexual violence, and so on.”

This is not the first time a popular show has been altered. In December, 2014, the show The Empress of China was temporarily banned due to an overabundance of cleavage being shown. When it returned to the air, it was with blurred-out breasts.

The ban also includes smoking, drinking, adultery, sexually suggestive clothing and nothing about the ideas of reincarnation. I’m not saying this pretty much cuts out all the good shows…but this cuts out all the good shows!

Television producers have also been informed that China’s State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television will constantly be monitoring the different channels to make sure that no shows run in violation of the rule.

There is clearly a precedent of them not being afraid to take shows off the air, so you better believe the producers are taking them seriously.

I guess they can’t expect to be able to watch Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad any time soon!
