As summer reaches its peak and travelers from different corners of the earth finalize their plans, we take a look at some of the luxury hotel openings around the world for August 2013.

Salcombe Harbour Hotel, United Kingdom – August 1

The Salcombe Harbour Hotel underwent a year-long renovation and reopened on August 1. It has 50 new bedrooms, with a majority having their own private balconies and panoramic views of the sea. It also has a new waterfront restaurant called The Jetty, featuring an outdoor terrace overlooking the estuary. It also has a two-level spa excavated into the cliff.

Waldorf Astoria Ras al Khaimah, Dubai – August 1

Less than an hour away from the international airport of Dubai is this new luxury hotel from Waldorf Astoria. Its design took a page from the palaces in the Gulf region. It has 346 rooms, 10 restaurants and an 18-hole golf course. Guests will also have access to a private beach 350 meters long.

Park Hyatt Siem Reap, Cambodia – August 1

The first Hyatt hotel in Cambodia was actually known as the Hotel de la Paix before. It underwent a 14-month renovation led by Bill Bensley, an esteemed interior designer. It has 108 bedrooms; 13 of these are suites, including four that have its own pool. The ruins that the area is known for are easily accessible to hotel guests.

Bagan Lodge, Myanmar – August 1

Bagan Lodge in Myanmar had its soft opening last August 1. It may seem rustic and old, but this is actually a four-star hotel located just on the outskirts of the Bagan Archaeological Zone. Guests can thus easily visit the thousands of temples and ruins in the area. The hotel has 85 rooms and provides a great base to explore the country before it gets overrun by tourists.

Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu, China – August 1

Qufu is the birthplace of Confucius, so it was just appropriate for the luxury hotel chain Shangri-La to name its VIP room as the Hall of Wisdom. The place is located in the province of Shandong in the northwestern part of China. From the front, the hotel actually looks like a Chinese pavilion with roofs accentuated by levels of grey flying eaves. The entire place is a reflection of the best of Chinese design and architecture. It has 211 rooms, a specialty Chinese restaurant called Shang Palace and a bridal room.

This luxury hotel had its soft opening with 13 of its 26 bedrooms already available for guests and visitors. It is a charming and unpretentious place that nevertheless boasts of a lot of luxury amenities. The hotel has a fine-dining place, as well as private gardens and a Kitchen Garden Café that is open every day during the summer season.

Mahali Mzuri, Kenya – August 1

The Mahali Mzuri in Kenya is part of the Virgin Group of Richard Branson. It has 12 suites and a 40-foot infinity pool. It prides itself with the minimal impact it has on the environment. Guests can take advantage of safari walks and wildlife viewing drives into the bush. It also offers a close and first hand look at the animals in the area. The best time to visit is between July and September when millions of gazelles, zebras and wildebeests make the great migration from the Serengeti.

Villa Rosa Kempinksi Hotel, Kenya – August 1

The Villa Rosa Kempinksi Hotel is located in the capital of Nairobi just off the Uhuru Highway within the country’s Westlands area. It has 10 stories with 200 rooms and suites, including an extremely luxurious presidential suite on the top floor. It also has modern facilities for banqueting and conferences. The grand ballroom is unique, as it does not have any pillars, thus affording up to 500 guests with an expansive view of the place. There are other smaller function rooms available for meetings and smaller gatherings.

This quiet and remote luxury hotel is located in central China. It has 107 villas and suites, with guests getting access to several hot spring pools both inside and outdoors. There is also a spa and other modern facilities available in the hotel.

Dormy House Hotel, Broadway, United Kingdom – August 2

This luxury hotel used to be a farmhouse hotel back in the 17th century. It sits on 400 acres of land and can provide guests with the perfect Cotswold retreat. The hotel’s House Spa will open in 2014 and will feature a Veuve Clicquot Champagne nail bar, swimming pool, gym and thermal suite.

The Andaz Maui at Wailea is a beachfront hotel that sits on 15 acres of land. It offers both conventional hotel guest rooms and residential-type villas. If you still are not satisfied with the generous ocean view, there are four cascading infinity pools in the hotel.

St. Regis, Abu Dhabi – August 15

The St. Regis in Abu Dhabi boasts of twin towers composed of 283 rooms. Majority of the rooms command a view of the Arabian Gulf. There is also a presidential suite that connects the two towers. Called the Abu Dhabi Suite, it has three bedrooms and is considered as the highest suspended presidential suite in the world at 200 meters high. The hotel has 10 culinary and lounge venues.

The Inn at John O’Groats, Scotland – August 16

The building of this luxury hotel can trace its roots back to the 19th century, or 1875 to be exact. While it has been recently modernized and expanded, the property now boasts of several self-catering apartments ranging from one-bedroom to four rooms. Kitchen and living areas have also been added. The rooms have scenic views of the entire coastline from Pentland Firth all the way to the Orkneys.

Just half an hour from Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. is the Salamander Resort & Spa located in Virginia. The state is known for its wide vineyards and for being a veritable horse country. It has an exclusive spa and a private courtyard, as well as an infinity pool. The renowned chef Todd Gray also runs a restaurant in this new luxury hotel. There is also a cooking studio and a wine bar. Conference and events can be hosted in this hotel.
